Credit where it is due: Postiz is a serious project

A lot of 'alternative' pages are written as if the competitor were incompetent. Postiz is not. It is one of the healthiest open-source projects in the social tooling space — around 32,600 GitHub stars, an AGPL-3.0 licence that actually means something, multiple releases a month, and reach into 30+ platforms, which is three times our native coverage.

It also read the room on AI earlier than most. Postiz shipped a native MCP server with dedicated Claude and ChatGPT integration while most of the category was still shipping Zapier recipes. If your priority is that an agent can drive your posting, Postiz is a legitimate answer and it is not a close call — they built it properly.

And for a certain kind of user, self-hosting is the whole point. Your data, your server, no per-seat pricing, no vendor deciding to change a plan out from under you. We do not offer that and we are not going to pretend hosted SaaS is strictly better.

The cost that is not on the pricing page

Here is the thing that catches self-hosters, and to Postiz's credit they say it themselves: publishing to the big platforms programmatically requires an approved developer app for each one, and when you self-host, that application is yours to make.

That means registering as a developer with Meta, TikTok, and Google, describing your use case, submitting screencasts demonstrating each permission you need, and waiting. Postiz notes Meta and YouTube can take over a month. In practice it is often longer, because the first submission is frequently rejected for a reason that only becomes clear on the third read of the policy, and the clock restarts.

On ViralNote that work is done. Meta, TikTok and YouTube review are cleared; you sign in, connect your account, and post. Whether that is worth paying for depends entirely on how you value six weeks of paperwork against $18 a month — but it should be in the comparison, and it usually isn't.

Neither an agent nor a scheduler can clip your video

The larger gap is upstream. Postiz's AI writes text: posts, captions, variations. It does not open your two-hour recording, find the six moments that stand alone, cut them, caption them, and reframe them to vertical.

Postiz's MCP is broad: it drives scheduling and publishing across 30+ platforms. If your requirement is 'my agent must reach as many networks as possible', that breadth wins outright.

ViralNote's 15 tools go narrower on networks and deeper on workflow. Beyond create, update, publish and delete, an agent can import media by URL or base64, list connected accounts, read per-post analytics and per-platform delivery results, and register webhooks. The practical difference: an agent can ask ViralNote what actually performed and adjust, or be notified when a post fails and retry it, without a human opening a dashboard. Postiz will publish more places; ViralNote will tell your agent more about what happened after it published.

Who should pick which

Pick Postiz if you are technical, you want to own your infrastructure, you need networks we do not cover, and you are comfortable running platform API applications yourself — or if you would rather pay $29 for their managed cloud than deal with any of that. It is a good product built by people who clearly care.

Pick ViralNote if your raw material is long video, or if the six weeks of Meta and YouTube review is a cost you would rather not absorb. Publish at $18 gives you 5 accounts on each of 10 networks with the full API and MCP surface; Pro at $38 adds the entire clipping pipeline.
